History

The Emilia Romagna region has a centuries old tradition of ironworking due to its vicinity to the mineral deposits of the Apennines.

Acciaieria di Rubiera was founded in 1965 in an area characterized by manufacturing and ceramics, at a time when the market for machining steels for the construction industry was in strong growth.

Production initially consisted of ingots for rolled rod and reinforced concrete rebar.
In a few years, the casting department was expanded with the installation of a further two electrical furnaces and a continuous casting plant for billet production.

In the Seventies, the company started producing high quality products such as low and medium alloy steels, alloy bars of various sizes for weldless pipe manufacturing and forging. The company was soon producing high quality steels with very low residual and gas content.

Starting in the Eighties, Acciaieria di Rubiera reorganized its production to concentrate on special steels, such as fine carbon steels and high purity alloys.

At the start of the Nineties, the company built a new facility to increase its bottom casting production and to meet the new requirements of the market for large size ingots up to 70 tons, and also refined its production of forging steel.

Acciaieria di Rubiera was the first Italian steelworks to use DC arc furnaces at the start of the Nineties, a technology which improved product quality and reduced power, electrode and refractory consumption compared to the existing AC technology, which we stopped using in 1994. This furnace, with its 70 ton capacity, has yielded significant improvements in quality and productivity.

In the early 2000 the company made several investments to meet new market’s requirements:

  1. extension of bottom casting facility to make ingots up to 120 tons
  2. buying two electro-slag remelting plants (100 tons capacity) and one vacuum arc remelting plant to further increase our steel quality
